Soil-Bentonite, Brookhaven Landfill, Long Island, NY PDF Drucken E-Mail

long_islandThe Rapid Mix 400 was also used in a soil-bentonite application in Brookhaven Landfill, Long Island, New York. Soil, bentonite and water were mixed together in order to produce 150,000 yd3 of soil-bentonite for this landfill site. Bentonite is a naturally occurring clay which consists mainly of the mineral montmorillonite. When mixed with water, the bentonite

expands and becomes a very effective water-proof material, thus sealing the landfill from leaching contaminates into the surrounding environment.

The mixing involves the soil being loaded into the aggregate hopper in the Rapid Mix 400 and then fed to the twinshaft mixer via the belt. Measurements and feed rates are all automated throughout. The bentonite itself is stored in the Rapid
Mix 400’s silo and is also fed accurately to the twin-shaft mixer. The water is distributed through the positive displacement pumps located in the Rapid Mix 400. All three components come together in the mixing chamber and are mixed using the twin-shaft mixer.
