The Morgan Corporation who owns the Rapidmix 600 mobile continuous mixing plant, successfully put the machine to work in order to produce approximately 150,000 square yards of 6" and 8" Roller Compacted Concrete at the BMW assembly plant, Spartanburg, SC, USA.
The project involved paving the parking lots, roads and trailer storage surrounding the new BMW automobile assembly plant. Along with Roller Compacted Concrete, the machine also produced cement treated aggregate base and cement treated soil.
Tom Webber from Morgan Corporation said “The mobile plant’s ability to produce high quality materials quickly enabled our company to complete the project on schedule for BMW.”
Rapid International’s Mobile Continuous Mixing Plant The Rapidmix 600 mobile continuous mixing plant is manufactured by Rapid International Ltd which is based in Northern Ireland. The Rapidmix 400 & 600 are both sold via a dealer network in the US which is overseen by Rapid Intl USA. The plant is totally mobile and completely self-contained with its own power source. It is fitted with a self erecting system, using hydraulics, which means that the plant can change from travel mode into a fully operational within a few hours.
The Rapidmix 600 mixes up to 600 Tonnes per hour depending on application and feed rates are fully adjustable for the aggregate, cement and water systems.
The benefits of using the Rapidmix 600 mobile continuous mixing plant with a Roller Compacted Concrete application is that it has the mixing efficiency needed to evenly disperse the relatively small amount of water used. Dump trucks then transport the Roller Compacted Concrete and discharge it into a paving plant , which places the material in layers up to 10 inches (250 mm) thick and 42 feet (13m) wide.
Compaction begins immediately after placement which is how the concrete attains its level of smoothness, density, surface texture and strength. This stage continues until the density requirements are met.
The final stage is curing where moisture is applied, allowing hydration of the concrete, thus causing it to harden and strengthen.
The machine can work on a variety of applications such as bentonite landfill sealing, dam construction, contaminated soil stabilisation as well as roller compacted concrete and cement treated base for road construction.
History of Roller Compacted Concrete
Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) has the same ingredients as conventional concrete; cement, water, and aggregates, however, it is a drier mix and stiff enough to be compacted by vibratory rollers. It has the strength and performance of regular concrete yet it is as economical and simple to use as asphalt. It was first used in the seventies in the logging industry in Canada, as they needed strong pavement to stand up to massive loads and heavy equipment having switched to environmentally cleaner, land-based log sorting methods. The strength and durability of Roller Compacted Concrete indeed lived up to the job and it has since expanded into other heavy duty applications.
Companies like the Morgan Corporation who are involved in these Roller Compacted Concrete projects recognise the life-cycle cost savings you get when using concrete as opposed to asphalt.
Rapid International Ltd Based in Northern Ireland, Rapid International has recently celebrated 40 years in business. Accompanying the existing continuous mixing plants, the Rapidmix 400C and 600C, Rapid has expanded the mobile range with a series of batching plants, the Rapidbatch 55, 70, 90, 120 and 160. This range offers batch production of ready mixed concrete combined with full mobility and cost effectiveness for the client. Production rates of 55 to 160m3 per hour are available with these plants. Plants are completely self contained allowing them to be used for on-site mixing in remote areas, giving savings in time, money and carbon emissions.
The Morgan Corporation The Morgan Corporation was the general contractor, hired by BMW, for the final grading, sewer/water and surfacing which was approximately 12 million dollars worth of construction. The company is based in the US and works on a variety of different projects in the field of site preparation for warehouses, manufacturing facilities, power generation stations, airports and mining/quarrying operations.
