Death of Bertie Pickering, Founding Member and Managing Director PDF Print E-mail

The unexpected passing of Bertie Pickering, a man of pivotal importance within the company and esteemed colleague, rendered last year a sad of at Rapid International Ltd. Bertie, who is greatly missed, founded the company with brother-in-law Jim Lappin when they formed a partnership in 1969 from very humble beginnings and began manufacturing purpose built Batching Plants and ancillary equipment for the concrete industry.  As business progressed, Jim dealt with Production, whilst Bertie took on the role as Sales and Marketing manager.  This took him the length and breadth of G.B. and Ireland, where he generated countless orders and made many friends.  Later, he travelled to various countries including U.S.A, Saudi Arabia and Australia where he established new contacts and dealerships.  His sheer dedication and commitment undoubtedly contributed to the success of the company.

In 1979 they became a Limited company and later became Rapid International Ltd.  The production of their own concrete pan mixers to fit into their existing plants was hugely successful as it meant that Rapid could supply the complete turn-key operation, including the after-sales and spares package from the one source.

In later years, Bertie was involved in Research and Development in new equipment which is a testament to the continuous expansion and success which the company had enjoyed and continues to enjoy today.  His joyful mood and sense of humour will be absent from functions, trade shows and throughout the industry.  He will be sadly missed.  Our sympathy goes out to his wife Doris and three children Sarah, Emma and John.

“It was a privilege and honour to work with such a man, a true friend, who is greatly missed” - Jim Lappin
